Infusing Concentrates

How to Mix Terpenes With
Extracts & Concentrates

Getting the hang of using terpenes in your extracts and concentrates might seem like a lot at first. But with ahand some tip sand some basic science know-how, you'll be good to go.  Before you start f mixing, there are a couple of things you should think about...

What kinds of terpenes should you use? What terpene ratio is best? Should you focus on flavor or effects? Can you do both?

What Are Extracts and Concentrates?

Cannabis concentrates and extracts are highly potent forms of cannabis that are created by extracting the desirable compounds, such as cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) and terpenes, from the plant material.

Concentrates, in general, refer to any form of cannabis product that has been processed to increase the potency of cannabinoids and other desired compounds while removing excess plant material.

Extracts, on the other hand, are a specific type of concentrate that requires the use of solvents like butane, CO2, or alcohol to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant material. This extraction process results in a concentrated substance that can be consumed through smoking, vaping, dabbing, or adding to edibles.

Why Should You Mix Terpenes With Extracts and Concentrates?

While concentrates and extracts can draw out some of the flavor and aroma of the original plant matter, some naturally get lost in the process. That’s because terpenes are sensitive to the elements involved in the process of extracting your desired compounds.

Some factors that affect terpenes:

  • Heat

  • Light

  • Rought handling of plant matter

  • Soil Quality

  • Farming techniques

Terpenes play a major role in dictating a plant's scent and flavor, so these are vital for a good-tasting and selling product! While cannabinoids are often considered the most prized compound of the cannabis plant, it’s the terpenes that dictate the overall experience.

Lets Get Started!

Ensure you have all the necessary equipment & that you understand how to use terpenes safely. Terpenes should be handled carefully and all safety ratios should be adhered to.

**Since most concentrate products are hard or dry when they’re finished it's best to infuse your extract in the extraction process. For example, if you are working with shatter it will be the easiest to add your terpenes and mix them thoroughly before it dries. **

If you are working with an already extracted product we will guide you on how to infuse these extracts

Depending on your product, and the size of your operation, you’ll need the following list of equipment:

  1. Syringe or Micro-Pipette

  2. Digital Scale

  3. Mixing Containers

  4. Mixing Tool

  5. Optional Diluents and Carriers

Step 1:Select Your Terpenes

Whether you’re using a pre-mixed blend, relying on isolates, or even getting creative with a new blend, make sure you’ve finalized your terpene choices.

Step 2: Measure

Measure out your desired amount of extract & terpenes

Step 3: Mixing

Add your extract to a glass beaker and heat it on a magnetic stirrer or warm water bath till the texture becomes more fluid(runnier) .  Depending on the consistency of your extract the amount of heat needed will vary.

Once your extract texture is runnier you can add your terpenes and start mixing with a magnetic stirrer or a mixing tool.

The mixing time needed will vary on the amount of extract but it is very important to mix thoroughly

Step 4: "Curing"

Depending on you may seal it in a jar and let it rest for twenty-four hours so the terpenes can fully infuse the product.

You can expect richer flavors, captivating aromas, and an authentic experience with your freshly infused products.

Summary

  • Cannabis concentrates are all about refining the good stuff, leaving behind any unwanted plant material so you're left with just the cannabinoids you want. We're diving into a specific type of concentrate that uses solvents in the proccess.

  • Some of the methods for creating concentrates or extracts (such as distillate) can alter or destroy the natural terpene profile of the original plant matter. That’s why adding terpenes back into extracts and concentrates is so appealing

  • It also ensures that you’ll have consistent flavors, scents, and effects across your entire line of products.

  • Before getting started, make sure you have all necessary materials and that you understand all the required safety precautions.

  • When mixing terpenes, start with a low amount (less than .5%) and increase the amount as necessary. Mix your terpenes when your product is still viscous and pliable; otherwise, thoroughly mixing the terpenes will be difficult.
